Something of the same Shibuya-kei bubblegum picture that also gave rise to Pizzicato Five, Japan pop-noise savant Cornelius was created Keigo Oyamada in 1969 in Setagaya, Tokyo. A self-taught guitarist influenced in early stages by Kiss and Dark Sabbath, he was also an associate from the music group Flipper’s Guitar; once the group split up in 1991, he started focusing on a single career, acquiring the name Cornelius as an homage to the earth from the Apes film series. Merging punk, pop, shoegaze, Brazilian and digital music with wide-ranging examples, Cornelius’ music epitomized Shibuya-kei’s playful postmodernism and in addition drew evaluations to American performers like Beck as well as the Beastie Males.
