Biography
Something of the same Shibuya-kei bubblegum picture that also gave rise to Pizzicato Five, Japan pop-noise savant Cornelius was created Keigo Oyamada in 1969 in Setagaya, Tokyo. A self-taught guitarist influenced in early stages by Kiss and Dark Sabbath, he was also an associate from the music group Flipper’s Guitar; once the group split up in 1991, he started focusing on a single career, acquiring the name Cornelius as an homage to the earth from the Apes film series. Merging punk, pop, shoegaze, Brazilian and digital music with wide-ranging examples, Cornelius’ music epitomized Shibuya-kei’s playful postmodernism and in addition drew evaluations to American performers like Beck as well as the Beastie Males. Cornelius debuted in 1993 using the EP Holydays in sunlight, the first launch from his personal Trattoria label. He became a nationwide teen idol within the wake from the launch of 1994’s full-length The First Query Award along with a 12 months later he released the recording 69/96, adopted in 1996 from the remix LP 96/69.
