Biography

b. Roydell Johnson, 12 Apr 1943, Kendal, Hanover, Jamaica, Western Indies. Johnson started his career carrying out with Ras Michael AS WELL AS THE Sons Of Negus, along with the lesser-known Rightful Brothers. He was launched to the previous vocalist using the Tartans, Cedric Myton, with the DJ Big Youngsters and maker Trevor Douglas. The mix of Myton’s falsetto vocals and Johnson’s tenor resulted in the duo forging an ideal vocal collaboration. In 1975, the duo started recording because the Congos. The next 12 months Lee Perry created their debut, ‘At The Feast’. The track led to classes for the pivotal Center FROM THE Congos, documented like a trio with baritone Watty Burnett and released in 1977 on Perry’s Dark Ark label. By 1980 the initial line-up from the Congos experienced split up as well as the users were pursuing single professions. Johnson’s debut as Congo Ashanti Roy, Indication FROM THE Star, premiered on Pre, the label in charge of Gregory Isaacs’ traditional Lonely Fan.
