Collin Walcott was among the first sitar players to try out jazz. As an associate of Oregon, Walcott’s versatility, interest in various cultures, and capability to play not merely sitar but tabla along with other percussion tools made him an extremely valuable musician. In early stages, he researched violin for just two years, and performed both snare drum and tympani in college. Walcott also researched percussion at Indiana College or university, and got sitar and tabla lessons with Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha, respectively. After stints with Tony Scott (1967-1969) and Tim Hardin, he joined up with the Paul Winter season Consort in 1970. Walcott remaining the group with three additional music artists (Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, and Glen Moore) in 1971 to create Oregon. Furthermore to documenting and touring with Oregon, a distinctive folk-jazz group, Walcott documented with Kilometers Davis in 1972, and was an associate of Codona (a trio with Don Cherry and Nana Vasconcelos) that documented for ECM. Tragically, Collin Walcott was wiped out in a visitors incident while on tour with Oregon in East Germany. He led three periods for ECM and will be heard over the Codona and early Oregon recordings.
