For pretty much 30 years, Claude Jones was a trusted trombonist who was simply both an excellent soloist and a very important section participant in big rings. The near future brother-in-law of Quentin Jackson, Jones started playing trombone (after some trumpet and drum lessons) when he was 13. After going to Wilberforce College for a while, Jones lowered out in 1922 and became a member of the Synco Jazz Music group (an ancestor of McKinney’s Natural cotton Pickers). He performed on / off using the group into 1929. Jones obtained some reputation for his use Fletcher Henderson (1929-1931).
