Kaua’i -based multi-instrumentalist Cindy Combs is among the few women to understand the slack essential guitar custom of Hawaii. A previous student of important slack essential guitarist Keola Beamer, Combs is growing as a new player, mixing traditional Hawaiian music with great jazz influences. Associated with her nine-piece music group, Ha’awi Hemolele ‘O Keakawaiola, along with a hula dancer, Combs opened up for Taj Mahal in a much-publicized advantage concert for Kaua’i community radio place, KKCR, in springtime 2002.
