Chu Berry

Biography

Chu Berry was considered among the best tenor saxophonists from the 1930s, just underneath Coleman Hawkins (his primary impact), Lester Teen, and Ben Webster. Especially solid on up-tempo quantities (although his ballad claims could be excessively sentimental), Berry may have become an important force if he previously not passed away prematurely. After playing alto in university, he turned to tenor in 1929 when he became a member of Sammy Stewart’s music group. In 1930, he shifted to NY, using Benny Carter’s music group and Charlie Johnson’s orchestra. He was prominently presented in Spike Hughes’ 1933 documenting classes, was a celebrity with the rings of Teddy Hill (1933-1935) and Fletcher Henderson (1936; to whom he added his music “Christopher Columbus”), and found a long term house with Cab Calloway in 1937. Berry was applied to many classes including along with his friend Roy Eldridge, Lionel Hampton (a vintage edition of “Sweethearts on Parade”), Teddy Wilson, and Calloway (his edition of “Ghost of the Opportunity” became well-known); furthermore he led several his own good times. Chu Berry passed away from the consequences of an automobile crash when he was simply 31.

#Fact
1 Is mentioned in the song "I Hear You Knocking" by Dave Edmunds.
2 He owns a warehouse full of old Cadillacs, one from every three or four model-years, all the way back to the mid-1950s, which he claims to be trying to get rid of, but says that nobody will give him a fair price, so he just stores them away.
3 Has served three jail terms--for armed robbery in 1944, for violation of the Mann Act in 1959 and for income-tax evasion in 1979. He served two years in the state penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, and was released in February 1964.
4 He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 1777 North Vine Street in Hollywood.
5 He made his national television debut on November 8, 1957 on New American Bandstand 1965 (1952) performing "Rock and Roll Music" twice in a row, by demand of the teenage dancers in the studio.
6 Born to a contractor and deacon of a Baptist church and his wife, a qualified principal, he was the third of six children.
7 Performs on a Wednesday each month at Blueberry Hill, a restaurant in the Delmar Loop neighborhood in St. Louis.
8 In Stephen King's novel "Christine", many chapters open with lyric fragments from his songs.
9 Is mentioned in "Chuck Berry Fields Forever" by Gilberto Gil, "Chuck Berry" by The Toasters and "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" by Bob Seger.
10 Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (charter member) and the American Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986.
11 Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1985 and the St. Louis Walk of Fame in 1989.
12 On June 1, 1979, President Jimmy Carter asked him to perform at the White House.
13 Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1982.
14 Whenever he performs live, he always picks a venue which is near an Indian restaurant, so he can have a meal straight after the show. When he was at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall in the 1990s, the stage door was directly opposite the front door of the Mogul-E-Azam, so he was able to sneak out the stage door, across the alley and have his meal without traveling too far (one of the roadies on duty that night let slip about the restaurant information).
15 One of his daughters, Aloha, went to the same high school (University City Senior High School) as actor Edgar L. Davis and rapper Nelly.
16 His only #1 hit was his controversial novelty song "My Ding a Ling".
17 He was voted the 5th Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Artist of all time by Rolling Stone.
18 He was arguably the most important figure in rock-n-roll in the 1950s, besides Elvis Presley. Although Presley had much more explosive record sales and greater commercial longevity, Berry was equally influential and had the satisfaction of knowing that he, unlike Presley, had written all of his own classics.
19 He worked as a janitor, carpenter and hairdresser.
20 He originally wanted to be a professional photographer and started singing and playing in a band to buy cameras and photography equipment. Some of his photographs of the famous and near-famous are hanging in galleries around the world today.
21 Received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1984.
22 Received a John F. Kennedy Center Honor in 2000.
23 Father of Ingrid Berry.
24 Born at 6:59am-CST.

#Quote
1 I would sing the blues if I had the blues.
2 It amazes me when I hear people say "I want to go out and find out who I am.". I always knew who I was. I was going to be famous if it killed me.
3 I love poetry. I love rhyming. Do you know, there are poets who don't rhyme? Shakespeare did not rhyme most of the time and that's why I do not like him.
4 People don't want to see seventeen pieces in neckties. They wanna see some jeans, some gettin' down and some wigglin'.

#Trademark
1 Dynamic blues based guitar riffs
2 The "Johnny B. Goode" riff
3 Gibson ES-335
4 Gibson guitars
5 Duckwalk
