Chris Difford

Biography

Lyricist/guitarist Chris Difford teamed with singer/composer Glenn Tilbrook to lead Press, probably one of the most acclaimed and longest-lived rings to emerge from the brand new wave era. Frequently thought to be the Lennon and McCartney of the era, the duo’s intelligent, sophisticated make of pop under no circumstances achieved commercial achievement commensurate making use of their vital favour, although singles like “Tugging Mussels (In the Shell),” “Tempted,” and “Dark Coffee during intercourse” remain classic cult classics. Blessed November 4, 1954, in London, Difford started writing and executing with Tilbrook in 1973, and the next year they produced Press; the group’s self-titled John Cale-produced debut LP implemented in 1978, yielding the minimal hit “Consider Me, I’m Yours.” Released in 1979, Great for Felines was Squeeze’s U.K. graph breakthrough, generating a set of number 2 singles, “In the Junction” as well as the name monitor. The follow-up, Argybargy, yielded the minimal strikes “Another Nail in my own Center” and “Tugging Mussels (In the Shell),” but solidified the group’s vital standing on the effectiveness of Difford’s wry, literate wordplay and Tilbrook’s sharp, smart melodies. Squeeze’s masterpiece, East Aspect Story, implemented in 1981, credit scoring the band’s biggest U.S. strike to date using the unforgettable “Tempted”; though 1982’s Sweets from a Stranger damaged the U.S. Best 40, buoyed with the solitary “Black Coffee during intercourse,” innovative exhaustion pressured the band’s separation immediately after. A 1983 strikes collection, Singles 45’s and Under, eventually proceeded to go platinum. After composing the Imperial Bedroom monitor “Boy having a Issue” with Elvis Costello, Difford resumed his cooperation with Tilbrook, composing tracks for fellow Press alum Jools Holland, in addition to Paul Adolescent, Billy Bremner, and Helen Shapiro. The duo also installed Labeled with Like, a short-lived 1983 stage musical modified using their tracks. A self-titled 1984 recording credited only to Difford and Tilbrook also made an appearance, but the pursuing yr they reunited Press release a Cosi Lover Tutti Frutti. 1987’s Babylon and On was their biggest U.S. strike, notching a set of Best 40 singles in “Hourglass” and “853-5937,” but following efforts appealed nearly exclusively with their dedicated cult pursuing. Difford continued hiatus through the group in 1999. He released his solo profession in 2003 using the record I Didn’t Obtain Where I Am, which highlighted production plus some songwriting help from Francis Dunnery. Recording Difford live and playing traditional Squeeze materials, the Compact disc/Dvd movie combo South East Aspect Story made an appearance in 2006, accompanied by the cleverly entitled THE FINAL Enticement of Chris in 2008. Although a reunited Press stayed a heading concern — early this year 2010, Difford announced that he and Tilbrook had been writing new music for the group — Difford didn’t reject his solo profession: he released his third single record, Cashmere when you can, in the summertime of 2011. The long-awaited Press reunion record, Cradle towards the Grave, finally materialized in 2015 as well as the group toured to get it. In 2017, Difford’s single albums had been boxed because the Chris towards the Mill arranged, which also included a disk of demos.

1 I met David Bowie while I was a roadie for him, although I use the word roadie loosely. A friend of mine was his tour manager, and I tagged along and helped paint things for the set and fetched wood from the yard. I was more of a gofer. David was wonderful to be around, like someone from Mars.
