Biography

The traveling force behind Mannheim Steamroller, Chip Davis was one of the pioneers of neo-classical electronic music, and along with his own independent label, American Gramaphone, helped bring about the brand new age phenomenon. Given birth to Louis Davis, Jr. in Sylvania, OH, Davis was raised inside a musical family members — his dad was a high-school music instructor and his mom was a trombonist with Phil Spitalny’s All Lady Orchestra. Davis’ grandmother was his 1st music teacher, providing the kid his preliminary piano lessons at age four; 2 yrs later on, he made up his 1st piece, a four-part chorale created honoring his doggie. He later on joined a males’ choir aswell, and while going to the University or college of Michigan performed bassoon within the school’s concert music group. After graduating in 1969, Davis was tapped to tour using the Norman Luboff Choir. After five years using the group, executing from pop to traditional, he came back to Sylvania to instruct music at the neighborhood junior senior high school, frequently adapting traditional standards to modern harmonies and rhythms for pupil consumption. Davis afterwards left teaching, organizing and performing an Omaha, NE, creation of Locks before accepting employment writing marketing jingles. With co-worker Costs Fries, he developed the enormously well-known C.W. McCall personality, afterwards the body behind the chart-topping strike “Convoy”; because the McCall trend proceeded to go into high equipment, however, Davis came back to the traditional adaptations he’d initial constructed while a instructor, and soon inserted the studio to begin with documenting what he dubbed “18th hundred years traditional rock and roll” — traditional music performed on electrical bass and synthesizers. He entitled the resulting record Fresh Aire, so when no label would contact it, he founded his very own business, American Gramaphone, in 1974, developing a fictitious music group called Mannheim Steamroller to raised promote the task. Davis initially advertised Clean Aire to stereo system showrooms, where his state-of-the-art audio proved perfect for demonstrating house stereo devices; the LP became a smash strike among audiophiles, and some popular Clean Aire sequels implemented in the a long time. In 1984, Davis released Mannheim Steamroller Xmas, which stunned onlookers by offering over five million copies on the effectiveness of a high 40 adult modern rendition of “Deck the Halls.” It had been implemented four years afterwards by A Clean Aire Xmas, another unqualified strike. The environment educated 1986’s Keeping the Animals, the soundtrack to some PBS unique, and was adopted three years later on by Yellowstone: The Music of Character, which elevated over half of a million dollars for the Country wide Parks Support. In the first ’90s, Davis — documenting under his personal name for the very first time — mounted a fresh group of recordings known collectively as Day time Parts, some mood items designed as accompaniment for everyday actions. Impressions, probably Davis’ most reflective and personal function to date, made an appearance in 1993; another 12 months he was commissioned to create materials for the Goodwill Video games in St. Petersburg, Russia, leading to the LP To Russia with Like.
