Chink Martin was a fixture in New Orleans for most decades. He began on electric guitar before switching to tuba. Martin began playing skillfully with Papa Jack port Laine’s Reliance Brass Music group around 1910. He freelanced locally and proceeded to go north in 1923 to try out and record with the brand new Orleans Tempo Kings. Martin quickly returned home, dealing with Johnny Bayersdorffer and saving again with the brand new Orleans Tempo Kings in 1925. Martin used the Halfway Home Orchestra, the brand new Orleans Tranquility Kings and down the road the brand new Orleans Golf swing Kings. He spent the 1930s as an employee musician at radio train station WSMB. Martin, who steadily turned to bass (although by no means completely quitting playing tuba) was a occupied freelancer through the ’40s,’50s and ’60s, using the who’s who of New Orleans jazz including Sharkey Bonano, Santo Pecora, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt and (in the ’60s) the Crawford-Ferguson Night time Owls. Martin led one recording (sticking with tuba) for Southland in 1963. His child, Martin “Small Chink” Abraham, was also an excellent bassist in New Orleans.
