Charlie Singleton

Charlie Singleton was a fresh York City-based saxophonist and bandleader who worked inside a leap blues/R&B vein through the past due ’40s and early ’50s. He and his group — alternately dubbed the Charlie Singleton Combo or the Charlie Singleton Orchestra — supported leap blues shouter H-Bomb Ferguson on several edges for Atlas Information in the first ’50s. Singleton himself also slice some instrumentals for Atlas, which became a number of the little, black-owned self-employed label’s biggest retailers; his most well-known documenting was 1952’s “My Music,” which helped result in a well-received stint within the Boston golf club scene that winter season. He also documented with famous brands Buck Clayton and Oscar Pettiford. Singleton’s combo later on continued to record for RCA Camden, which released the LP THE BEST Twist Hits in 1962.
