Charlie Austin

Outside the Artwork Outfit of Chicago and other multi-instrumentalists like Anthony Braxton, right now there aren’t many players with the capacity of displaying abilities in as much various ways as Charles Austin. He’s not merely documented in duo, little combos and huge orchestras, but offers played as much as six tools on a day, and rarely less than three. Included in these are such little-used products (for jazz) as British horn and oboe, in addition to the customary alto, soprano, tenor sax and flute arsenal. Austin’s an excellent, occasionally fiery soloist, however, not as varied a composer or performer like a Henry Threadgill, Joseph Jarman or Roscoe Mitchell. Still, his albums are rarely regular affairs, are targeted at fans with preferences beyond the mainstream.
