Biography
b. Carson Raymond Smith, 9 January 1931, SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, California, USA, d. 2 November 1997, NEVADA, Nevada USA. Smith’s family members moved to LA while he was still a kid, but, after completing his schooling, he initial tried employed in the brand new York region. Although he was an excellent bass player, function was scarce and in 1952 he came back to LA, where he quickly found function in Gerry Mulligan’s renowned quartet alongside Chet Baker. Mulligan not merely utilized his playing skills but also documented a few of his compositions, and afterwards acknowledged that a few of Smith’s tips helped to form the audio and design of the group. The lack of a piano, specifically, produced his bass a central area of the quartet’s sound. The music group split up in 1953 immediately after ‘My Funny Valentine’ acquired supplied them with a huge hit, and through the remainder from the 50s Smith proved helpful in small rings led by Russ Freeman and Chico Hamilton; he also caused Charlie Parker, Clifford Dark brown, Billie Vacation and Dick Twardzik. By the end from the 10 years he was briefly with Stan Kenton before relocating to NEVADA, where he continuing to operate in jazz groupings, including Charlie Teagarden’s music group, Buddy High, Georgie Auld, with whom he toured Japan, Lew Tabackin, Zoot Sims and many more, including a LA reunion concert with Mulligan. Dizzy Gillespie remarked of Smith within the 80s that he previously not noticed a bass participant like him since Oscar Pettiford. Smith’s sibling, Putter Smith, can be a well-known western coast-based bass participant.
