Carly Simon

Biography

Carly Simon was perhaps one of the most well-known from the confessional singer/songwriters who emerged in the first ’70s. The youngest kid within an upper-class NY family (her dad, Richard Simon, co-founded the Simon & Schuster submitting firm), Simon got her begin in music within a duo with her sister Lucy (who afterwards composed the music for the Broadway display The Secret Backyard). The Simon Sisters acquired a chart one with “Winkin’ Blinkin’ and Nod” in Apr 1964. But Simon’s solo debut didn’t come before discharge of her self-titled initial album in Feb 1971. It included her first single strike, “That is the Method I’ve Always Noticed IT OUGHT TO BE,” an anti-marriage tune co-written with Jacob Brackman that reached the very best Ten. Simon’s second record, Expectation (November 1971) (which proceeded to go gold in 2 yrs), included a high 40 follow-up within the name tune, and she gained the 1971 Grammy Prize for Greatest New Musician. Her third record, the gold number 1 No Secrets (November 1972), was made by Richard Perry and included the gold number 1 strike “You’re Therefore Vain,” which aroused speculation about its subject matter. Mick Jagger, one particular suggested, sang back-up on the documenting. “THE PROPER Move to make,” another single from your album, made the very best 40. Simon wedded fellow vocalist/songwriter Wayne Taylor in November 1972. (They divorced in 1983.) Her 4th album, the very best Ten Hotcakes (January 1974), included a gold TOP remake from the Inez & Charlie Foxx strike “Mockingbird” sung with Taylor and the very best Ten strike “Haven’t Got Period for the Discomfort”; it became her third consecutive platinum LP. Playing Possum (Apr 1975), containing the very best 40 strike “Attitude Dance,” was another TOP LP. Simon’s 6th album, Another Traveler (June 1976), was a member of family commercial disappointment. However in 1977, she sang “No one WOULD IT Better,” the theme melody for the Adam Connection film The Spy Who Loved Me, producing a gold TOP strike. Her seventh record, Boys within the Trees and shrubs (Apr 1978), was a million-selling achievement, buoyed by the very best Ten strike “You Participate in Me” and a high 40 duet cover of “Specialized in You” with Taylor. Simon’s 8th and ninth albums, Spy (June 1979) and Arrive Upstairs (June 1980), had been less successful, although latter included the gold Best 40 strike “Jesse.” In Oct 1980, Simon collapsed of exhaustion on-stage, and her concert performances became uncommon. Her next record, Torch (Sept 1981), was presented with to pre- and non-rock addresses. In 1982, Simon have scored a high Ten U.K. strike with “Why,” a melody made by the disco group Chic from your movie Soup for just one. In 1983, she came back towards the U.K. Best 40 because the uncredited vocalist within the Will Capabilities (Lynn Goldsmith) satire “Kissing confidently.” Simon’s profession within the U.S. is at decline, however, because the albums Hello Big Guy (Sept 1983) and Spoiled Woman (July 1985) had been poor retailers. She came back to the very best 40 in 1986 with another film theme, “Arriving Around Once again,” from Heartburn (the 1987 Arriving Around Once again LP proceeded to go platinum) and experienced another movie-related strike using the Grammy- and Oscar-winning “Allow River Work” from your film Working Woman in 1988. In 1990, Simon released both My Love (March), another recording of pop addresses, and also have You Seen Me Recently? (Sept), an recording of original tunes. She obtained the film THAT IS MY ENTIRE LIFE in 1992. In 1993, Simon’s “family members opera” Romulus Hunt premiered and premiered on record, and 1994 brought the discharge of a fresh album, Letters By no means Sent (November). A three-CD/cassette package arranged retrospective, Clouds in my own Coffee 1965-1995, made an appearance in November 1995. Film Noir adopted two years later on, and in the springtime of 2000 Simon came back with her initial record of primary materials in six years, THE BED ROOM Tapes. In 2002 she released Xmas Is Almost Right here, a assortment of holiday-themed materials, accompanied by another assortment of brand-new materials, Moonlight Serenade, in 2005. Into Light, which featured mainly versions of criteria, premiered in 2006. After putting your signature on with Listen to Music, Simon released This sort of Like in 2008. Hardly ever Been Gone made an appearance in ’09 2009 and was quickly accompanied by the vacation EP Hymn: A Musical Xmas Card, a cooperation with harpist Andreas Vollenweider. #Fact
Though Carly sang the popular theme song "Nobody Does It Better" from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), this was not her first liaison with 007. When she (then 20) and sister Lucy (22) were traveling on a liner from England to New York in 1965, they met Sean Connery (35) who invited them to his cabin for drinks and later proposed a ménage à trois. They purportedly declined and the proposal was later coined a "Simon sisters sandwich" by their friends.
With her 1988 hit "Let the River Run" from the film Working Girl (1988), she became the first artist in history to win a Grammy Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award for a song written and performed entirely by a single artist.
Awarded the ASCAP Founders Award in 2012.
The Simon family home was located in Stamford, Connecticut.
One of the few singer-songwriters from her generation to own all her music.
Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994.
Grandmother of Bodhi Taylor Bragonier, born 4 October 2007.
Daughter, Sally Taylor, is expecting Carly's first grandchild in September 2007.
Her father was of German Jewish descent. Her maternal grandfather, Frederick A. Heinemann, was of German origin, and her maternal grandmother, Asuncion Elma Maria Del Rio, was of Spanish descent. Carly has stated that she may have distant Moorish heritage through her Spanish ancestry.
She once said in an interview she never goes anywhere without her plush Daffy Duck toy. Daffy Duck is her all-time favorite cartoon character, and she has even hinted in several other interviews that he's the subject of her famous song "You're So Vain".
In November 2001, "Let the River Run," her award-winning theme song from Working Girl (1988), was used in a memorable public service ad produced for the U.S. Postal Service. The ad, entitled "Pride," was a response to the 9/11 and anthrax attacks of 2001, and was intended to restore confidence and improve morale for the USPS.
Is mentioned in the song "Life Is a Rock But the Radio Rolled Me" by Reunion.
Sister, Lucy Simon, is a singer; brother, Peter Simon, is a photojournalist; sister, Joanna Simon, is an opera singer, was an Emmy-winning arts correspondent for PBS NewsHour (1975), and is the VP of Fox Residential Group real estate.
In support of her latest album, "Moonlight Serenade" (July 2005), she has said she will be making public appearances, in direct defiance of her long-standing stage fright, about which she now says she "no longer has time for that negativity".
In 2003, she held an auction for a charity on Martha's Vineyard at which she offered to tell the high bidder who the song "You're So Vain" is about. The winning bidder was Dick Ebersol, then-chairman of NBC Sports & Olympics, who paid $50,000. Ebersol had to sign a confidentiality agreement, but was allowed to give one hint: The man's name contains the letter E. Carly has since added an additional hint: The man's name also contains the letter A.
2003, fractured her shoulder falling in the bathtub.
Carly's mother Andrea and her close personal friend Jacqueline Kennedy died four months apart. Carly wrote "Like a River" for her mother and "Touched by the Sun" for Jackie. Both songs appear on her 1994 "Letter's Never Sent" album.
Diagnosed with breast cancer [October 1997]
