Biography

Carl T. Sprague was among the 1st cowboys on record, paving just how for such good rangeland performers as Jules Allen, the Cartwright Brothers, and Harry McClintock. He was created in Houston and spent period as a youngsters involved with ranching and farming; the cowboy tunes he performed had been authentic, discovered around late-night campfires. After graduating university in 1922, he started sometimes playing on radio, and was influenced to record after hearing Vernon Dalhart’s “The Prisoner’s Track.” Sprague visited Camden, NJ, in 1925 and cut his debut recordings “Once the Work’s All Carried out This Fall” and “Poor Companions”; both of the cowboy music became quite effective, and he continuing documenting for Victor through 1929. Within the ’30s he worked well several different careers after settling down completely in Bryan, TX, but do return to carrying out through the folk revival years.
