Cardinal

Biography

Originally a one-off project from singer/songwriters Richard Davies and Eric Matthews, Cardinal came jointly in 1994 following ex-Moles frontman Davies’ relocation from his native Australia towards the U.S.; he composed and sang all except one of the music that comprised Cardinal’s self-titled debut, while Matthews organized the compositions, layering them with ornate strings, horns, and pianos motivated with the lush, baroque noises of past due-’60s pop. While Cardinal premiered to great acclaim, inner strife quickly divide the duo aside, and both Davies and Matthews embarked on single careers. An improbable reunion in 2011 created their sophomore follow-up, Hymns.
