Calypso King & the Soul Investigators

When NY retro-funk label Desco shut its doorways, co-founder Phillipe Lehman started up a fresh label, Spirit Fire, that was dedicated to launching only the type of rough, organic, lower-fidelity funk Lehman recommended. Calypso Ruler & the Spirit Investigators were the very first music group to concern a full-length record on Spirit Fireplace, and like lots of the groupings in Lehman’s orbit, their roots were improbable: a Meters/J.B.’s/MG’s-styled instrumental funk music group from Helsinki, Finland. All of the members performed in other rings; guitarist Pete Toikkanen is at a garage rock and roll group known as the Paisley, while organist Antti Maattanen, bassist Sami Kantelinen, and drummer Jukka Sarapaa all performed in Disposition (aka Maor Presto). Developing in 1998, the group released several 45s before starting up with Lehman; following a debut one on Spirit Fireplace in 2000, “Compin’ and Smokin’,” they documented their debut full-length, Spirit Strike! that was released in 2001. The Spirit Investigators subsequently documented for their very own Timmion label using a recently added horn section, offering trumpeter Eero Savela, trombonist Erno Haukkala, and saxophonist Lasse Tolvanen.
