Cadillac Baby

Chicago has seen its share of resourceful entrepreneurs and colorful individuals, and something who still left his mark in its musical landscape was producer and nightclub owner Narvel Eatmon, skillfully referred to as Cadillac Baby. Chiefly appreciated today because the guy behind Bea & Baby Information, he signed a lot of Chicago’s best bluesmen and constructed an extraordinary catalog that is reissued piecemeal since his loss of life in 1991. Eatmon was created in Cayuga, MS on July 3, 1914, and adopted the same path northward as many of the music artists he would later on record. His steady achievement as businessman and impresario was constructed upon several simultaneously taken care of storefront operations including an appliance restoration assistance, a well-stocked record shop, and a chocolate shop heated by way of a real wood burning range. The crowning glories of Eatmon’s small empire had been Cadillac Baby’s Showbar at 47th and Dearborn as well as the Bea & Baby record business which he founded along with his wife Bea in 1959. This label, and its own subsidiaries, Keyhole and Miss, gradually racked up an extraordinary array of game titles by Roosevelt Sykes, Wayne Cotton, Sunnyland Thin, Homesick Wayne, Eddie Boyd, Hound Pet Taylor, Earl Hooker, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Small Mac pc Simmons, L.G. McKinley, Willie Williams, Johnny Littlejohn, Detroit Junior, Hammie Nixon, Porter Kilbert, Oett “Sax” Mallard, High Paul Hankins, Sleepy John Estes, Arlean Dark brown, Menard Rogers, Willie Hudson, Andrew McMahon, and pop-oriented vocal tranquility groups just like the Probabilities, the Daylighters, and Trust Taylor & the Lovely Teenagers. In 1960, Bea & Baby released their most effective strike: Bobby Saxton’s “Attempting to produce a Living.” Tragedy struck close to the end from the ’70s whenever a open fire obliterated the record shop and headquarters from the label, destroying LPs and 45s, tapes, photos, and documents. By using Michael Frank, whom he’d known since 1974, Eatmon were able to continue advertising music, and through the ‘80s they co-produced a documenting task for rapper 3D. Cadillac Baby passed on in 1991. After servings from the Bea & Baby catalog resurfaced haphazardly on several carelessly contrived compilations, Michael Robert Frank attempt to compile and reissue Eatmon’s full legacy of great documented music in a far more orderly and extensive manner by himself Earwig label. Sadly, misunderstandings arose in 2008 when Cadillac Information, a major film dramatizing the storyplot of Chess Information, premiered to great acclaim. The irony here’s nearly palpable, as Vee Jay and Chess had been two of Bea & Baby’s biggest rivals.
