Biography
As one-half from the classic-era hip-hop duo Pete Rock and roll & C.L. Steady, C.L. Steady was in charge of penning a few of hip-hop’s classic classics, including “The Originator,” “Straighten It Out,” “Consider You There,” as well as the landmark “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Con.).” His simple voice, effortless stream, and mindful lyrics were conveniently recognizable signatures of Smooth’s design, with Pete Rock’s soulful and cool backing, they recognized themselves being a formidable duo also amid the flourishing of several other acclaimed choice rap groupings in the first ’90s. Smooth, blessed Corey Penn, grew up on his grandparents’ jazz music. We were young in Support Vernon, NY, his grandfather generally used to get means of integrating jazz into many areas of his lifestyle; thus, it had been only organic that Steady would gravitate toward his literal spirit partner, Pete Rock and roll, a pal whom he fulfilled in grade college. Agreed upon to Elektra, Pete Rock and roll & C.L. Simple released three respectable initiatives — 1991’s All Souled Out EP, 1992’s Mecca as well as the Spirit Brother, and 1994’s THE PRIMARY Component — which quickly inducted them into hip-hop’s top notch with equivalent jazz-rap groups such as a Tribe Called Goal and Gang Starr. non-etheless, after their second full-length, both went their different methods in 1995. Rock and roll continued to construct his extensive manufacturer réamounté, becoming among hip-hop’s most revered beatsmiths, but Steady receded from rap music nearly entirely, contributing just a few visitor rhymes occasionally, including on Rock’s 1998 single album Spirit Survivor. In 2004, after nearly ten years off their break up, Smooth and Rock and roll announced a reunion record. Upon the discharge of the vinyl fabric 12″ “Glimmer on Me” b/w “Climax,” the duo was extremely enthusiastically welcomed back again, though mainly among underground hip-hop listeners. Soon afterward, however, both cannot reconcile, and provided the bitter remarks exchanged between one another in interviews, the chance of their operating together seemed no more a possibility. Inside a year from the failed reunion task, news pass on of Smooth’s putting your signature on with Shaman Function Recordings’ eclectic, self-employed hip-hop roster. And closing the decade-long retreat, he released his 1st solo recording, American Me, in Oct 2006.
