Buster Pickens


b. 3 June 1916, Hempstead, Tx, USA, d. 24 November 1964, Houston, Tx, USA. An early on lifestyle as an itinerant musician, playing barrelhouses over the southern state governments, enabled Pickens to build up his down-home blues piano design, though it was solidly in the Tx idiom. Following military services service in Globe Battle II, he resolved back Houston, and produced his initial record, helping the vocals of Alger ‘Tx’ Alexander, alongside guitarist Leon Benton. He also performed frequently with Lightnin’ Hopkins, and made an appearance as accompanist on a few of that musician’s information for Prestige/Bluesville in the first 60s. He also produced a solo record in 1960, which showed his deep understanding of the Tx blues style. The options of an effective new career within the blues revival, nevertheless, had been tragically curtailed when he was murdered a couple of years later.
