Broadway Quintet

The Broadway Quintet was originally formed in 1962 as an extension from the United Country wide Independence Party, led by Kenneth Kaunda, which took power in 1964. These were a party music group, playing “mazungu” (White colored) music, or Traditional western pop materials, for audiences for the Lusaka resort circuit. Their unique regular membership was culled from several other resort bands, like the Rhokana Melodies, De Dark Evening Follies, the Crooners, and the town Quads. They endured in to the ’80s, and beneath the management of keyboardist Tonny Maonde, they earned Zambia’s best music group honor in 1981.
