Boston-based singer/songwriter Brian Stevens initial gained attention as you third from the Cavedogs, a power pop trio that never quite were able to make a lot of the feeling beyond its dedicated cult, though it did have the ability to produce a great couple of albums, 1990’s Joy Rides for Shut-Ins and 1992’s Soul Martini. (They weren’t helped at simply by their preliminary label, Enigma Information, falling into personal bankruptcy simple weeks after their debut album’s discharge.) Disillusioned, the Cavedogs split in 1992. Stevens instantly started dealing with a fellow Bostonian, Aimee Mann, playing on her behalf 1st solo recording, 1993’s Whatever, and becoming a member of her backing music group because of its tour. When the tour was over, Stevens authorized using the fledgling Boston indie Q Department Records (as do the additional two previous Cavedogs, Mark Streams with his fresh group Poundcake and Todd Spahr using the Gravy) and started focus on his 1st solo recording. Prettier Than You premiered in early 1996, offering guest looks by fellow Mann alums Dave Gregory (who hadn’t yet stop XTC) and Jon Brion, aswell as local vocalist/songwriter Merrie Amsterburg. Stevens after that went underground for quite some time, placing only a set of tunes on indie compilations: “JUST A LITTLE Bird EXPLAINED Therefore” on Yellow Supplements, Vol. 2 and “Xmas Waltz” on Viva Noel: A Q Department Xmas, and playing a reunion arranged using the Cavedogs in the 2001 International Pop Overthrow event in LA.
