Canada’s Brandi Disterheft is a Juno Award-winning bassist, composer, and bandleader whose music straddles the collection between ebullient, straight-ahead jazz and genre-bending initial compositions. A indigenous of Vancouver, English Columbia, Disterheft was raised inside a musical family members and first started playing bass alongside her mom, pianist and organist Fran Jarre. After senior high school, she gained a scholarship or grant to Humber University in Toronto, where she furthered her musical research under bassist Don Thompson. During this time period, she also logged hours learning with such luminaries as Rufus Reid, Rodney Whitaker, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Oscar Peterson, as well as others. Also while at college, she started gigging regularly around the Toronto jazz picture and made an appearance on many albums with pianist Richard Whiteman. In 2007, she produced her debut using the aptly entitled Debut, offering Chris Gale, Alexander Dark brown, Nathan Hiltz, Adrean Farrugia, David Virelles, Sly Juhas, and Sophia Perlman. The recording was an enormous critical success, earning Disterheft the Juno Honor for Traditional Jazz Recording of the entire year. She then implemented up with Second Aspect, an adventurous record that discovered her growing her stylistic palette to add modern jazz, big-band preparations, and Latin rhythms. Around 2010, Disterheft relocated to NEW YORK, where she ensconced herself in regular jam periods and researched with renowned bassist Ron Carter. Her third studio room album, 2012’s Appreciation, reflected her development with an all-star lineup, offering trumpeter Sean Jones, alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, flautist Anne Drummond, pianist Renee Rosnes, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. The record also showcased her vocals, with tracks delivered in British and French. In 2016, Disterheft released her 4th solo record, Blue Canvas, offering pianist Harold Mabern and drummer Joe Farnsworth.
