Bob Russell

Biography

American pop lyricist and Songwriters Hall of Popularity member Bob Russell was a dynamic Tin Pan Alley and Hollywood songwriter through the 1940s and 1950s and wrote such pop songs as “Carry out Nothin’ Till You Listen to from Me” and “DO NOT GET Around Very much Anymore.” Given birth to Sidney Keith Russell in Passaic, NJ, in 1914, he loved his first strike tunes in 1940 with “Frenesi,” “Marie Elena,” and “Brazil” around the Lucky Hit Parade. A few of his best-known tunes are “DO NOT GET Around Very much Anymore” (1942), “Perform Nothin’ Right up until You Listen to From Me” (1943), “I Didn’t FIND OUT ABOUT You” (1944), “Dance Ballerina Dance” (1947), “You Emerged quite a distance From St. Louis” (1948), “Crazy He Phone calls Me,” and “It is the Beast in Me.” Over time, Russell collaborated with several songwriters, including Duke Ellington, Harry Warren, Carl Sigman, and Lester Lee, with whom Russell penned tracks for films such as for example Blue Gardenia, Grab Glory, Jack as well as the Beanstalk, as well as the theme tune for THE LADY PROBABLY. The tracks that Russell co-wrote with Quincy Jones — “The Eye of Like” for the film Banning and “For the Like of Ivy” through the film of the same name — garnered the songwriters Academy Award nominations in 1968 and 1969. 1969 also brought Russell’s last tune: “He Ain’t Large He’s MY BUDDY.”
