The rise of rock music in the ’50s and ’60s led to many fine players from the prior era of swing. This saxophonist, on the far side of the unemployment line, do more than simply get with the brand new tendencies. His comprehensive grounding in the intensely rhythmic music in the jazz custom that gave delivery to rock appeared to be simply the planning he had a need to become perhaps one of the most authoritative tenor saxophone soloists from the ’50s and ’60s, although he had not been always acknowledged.
