Blue Mitchell

Owner of a primary, lightly swinging, somewhat plain-wrapped firmness that fit ideal along with the Blue Notice label’s hard bop ethos from the 1960s, Blue Mitchell is commonly overlooked today perhaps because he hardly ever really stood out vividly from your crowd, in spite of his undeniable skill. After learning the trumpet in senior high school — where he got his nickname — he began touring in the first ’50s using the R&B rings of Paul Williams, Earl Bostic, and Chuck Willis before time for Miami and jazz.
