Bitch Magnet

Biography

Area of the extended Squirrel Bait family members tree, Bitch Magnet was 1 of 2 rings that guitarist David Grubbs joined in the wake of his departure. Unlike another one, Bastro, Grubbs wasn’t a charter person in Bitch Magnet, nor was he the first choice; that duty dropped to bassist/vocalist Sooyoung Recreation area. Similar to Bastro, nevertheless, Bitch Magnet performed a blistering and intellectual make of post-hardcore punk, which frequently drew evaluations to Steve Albini’s Big Dark; these were also grouped with a far more immediate Squirrel Bait descendant, Slint, albeit even more relentless and relatively much less nuanced. Sooyoung Recreation area founded Bitch Magnet in 1986 while students at Oberlin University in Ohio, signing up for with guitarist Jon Great and drummer Orestes Delatorre (aka Orestes Morfin); despite their Oberlin root base, the trio was in fact located in Chapel Hill, NC. Bitch Magnet agreed upon using the indie label Communion and debuted in 1988 using the Superstar Booty 12″ EP, that was made by Steve Albini himself and gained the music group some notice in the underground rock and roll picture. For the follow-up, 1989’s full-length Umber, they added second guitarist David Galt (a afterwards CD concern appended Superstar Booty aswell). Galt’s place was used by David Grubbs afterwards in 1989, and Grubbs toured using the group among commitments with Bastro. Grubbs made an appearance in the EP Valmead and on Bitch Magnet’s last record, Ben Hur, both released in 1990. After Bitch Magnet’s break up late that season, all four associates continued to other tasks: Park produced the acclaimed Seam; Grubbs came back to Bastro, which advanced in to the seminal Gastr del Sol; Great used Vineland and Don Caballero; and Orestes Morfin resurfaced in Walt Mink. In 2011, the band’s whole catalog was remastered and reissued by Brief Residence, as well as the music group — Park, Great, and Morfin — followed the discharge with live schedules in European countries, Asia, and during 2012, THE UNITED STATES.
