Biography

Birtha were among the initial US all-female rings to try and penetrate the exclusively man bastion of large rock. Composed of Rosemary Butler (bass, vocals), Sherry Hagler (keyboards), Liver organ Favela (drums) and Shele Pinizzotto (electric guitar, vocals), they released two exceptional hard rock and roll albums through the early 70s. They specific in restricted harmonies and performed in a method much like that of early Uriah Heep, but had been, perhaps unjustly, seen as a novelty at that time. Their tasteless promotion handout throughout their early 70s UK tour using the Kinks, proclaiming ‘Birtha provides balls’, doubtless do little to improve this image. Alongside Fanny, they helped to pave just how for future feminine rockers like the Runaways.
