Bill Dana

Biography

Despite an effective career under his own name, the real legacy of actor/comedian Costs Dana continues to be Jose Jimenez, a character introduced over the Steve Allen Present that continued to become perhaps one of the most beloved comic creations from the period. Blessed William Szathmary in Quincy, MA, on Oct 5, 1924, Dana started his career being a writer following a serious back injury briefly derailed his carrying out dreams. After creating gags for famous brands George Gobel and Don Adams through the entire first fifty percent of the 1950s, in 1956 he became a member of the staff from the Steve Allen Display, where his backstage impression of the Latin-American character called Jose Jimenez therefore impressed sponsor Allen that Dana was asked to seem as Jose for the program’s 1959 Xmas unique. The sketch demonstrated immediately favored by audiences, and quickly Dana graduated through the writing staff towards the part of presented performer; although he developed several characters of differing cultural backgrounds, the naïve, good-natured Jose — filled with the brand opening range “My name…Jose Jimenez” — continued to be the program’s consensus favourite. Considering that Dana himself was of Hungarian Jewish descent, there is considerable controversy on the recognized stereotyping of his characterization, however in reality Jose Jimenez was about not really ethnic humor a lot as satirizing American tradition overall. Dana produced his saving debut in 1960 with My Name…Jose Jimenez, an album break up between clips through the Steve Allen Display along with a sketch built around a press meeting. Following his achievement on tv and on record, Dana graduated to nightclubs; his 1st displays at San Francisco’s famed Starving i club shaped the foundation for 1961’s Jose Jimenez the Astronaut, which lampooned the existing American desire for the space competition. Once the record became a popular due to NASA’s Cape Canaveral, it received significant media attention, so when the humor regimen “The Astronaut” was ultimately issued as an individual, it reached the very best 20. Following the record’s achievement, subsequent LPs positioned Jose in likewise outlandish circumstances; Jose Jimenez the Submarine Official reprised routines in the Steve Allen Present and The Spike Jones Present, while 1962’s Jose Jimenez in Orbit came back the type to the area program. Following a flurry of produces including 1962’s Jose Jimenez Foretells Teenagers of most Ages and the next year’s Our Top secret Tool and Jose Jimenez in Jollywood, he received his very own sitcom, The Costs Dana Present, in 1963. This program, which cast Jose being a resort bellhop, went through 1965, of which point it had been clear its superstar wanted to move ahead to new tasks; the 1964 LP Costs Dana in NEVADA, while offering some Jose materials, also included routines not really performed in the character’s perspective. Because the Jose Jimenez trend steadily ceased, Dana generally receded from watch, signing on being a manufacturer and periodic performer going back few seasons from the Milton Berle Display during the middle-’60s. He came back in 1970 using the recording Hoo Hah! Direct from Noshville, a parody from the series Hee Haw steeped in his Jewish history. For another several years, Dana focused mainly on composing and directing, producing several guest looks in tv and film tasks and sometimes dragging Jose Jimenez from mothballs; following the 1991 compilation THE VERY BEST of Jose Jiminez, Dana came back to the studio room to record a assortment of all-new materials titled Jose IS IT POSSIBLE TO See.

#Quote
1 [on Richard Nixon] I hated everything he stood for, but I got on his enemies list and it destroyed me. It was terrible. I was on his IRS enemies list. They crucified me. I was sick in bed and they were crawling all over my house with tape measures, looking to see how much of the house I had written off for an office. He is a devil to me. I just despise the thought of Richard Nixon and anyone who had anything to do with him.
2 [on Don Adams] Don--the only thing he enjoyed was going to the track. He didn't enjoy ANYTHING else. Let's see. He liked working with me [on The Bill Dana Show (1963)] as Byron Glick the hotel detective, because he didn't have any responsibility other than to be there.
