Bill Challis

As personnel arranger for Jean Goldkette (1926) and Paul Whiteman (1927-1930), Expenses Challis was largely in charge of majority of both big rings’ most jazz-oriented graphs, including “Weekend,” “My Pretty Young lady,” “Adjustments,” “Dardanella,” & most notably “San.” Challis also had written for Frankie Trumbauer’s small-group times with Bix Beiderbecke, and aided Beiderbecke in documenting piano items (including “Inside a Mist”). After departing, he contributed preparations to a number of big rings, including Fletcher Henderson, the Dorsey Brothers, the Casa Loma Orchestra, Artie Shaw (“Blues in the night time”), many radio orchestras, and pop classes. Challis was energetic in to the 1960s, and in 1986 a lot of his greatest arrangements were documented by Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks and Tom Pletcher (The Goldkette Task).
