Big Chief Russell Moore

An excellent Dixieland trombonist (although hardly ever a major participant), Big Key Russell Moore had an extended and busy profession. A member from the American Indian Pima tribe, Moore transferred to Blue Isle, IL in 1924 and examined music along with his uncle, playing trumpet, piano, drums and french horn before buying trombone. He relocated to LA in the first 1930s and caused Lionel Hampton (1935), with Eddie Barefield so that as a freelance participant. Moore transferred to New Orleans in 1939 where he used Oscar Celestin, Child Rena, A.J. Piron and Paul Barbarin. After stints with Ernie Areas, Harlan Leonard and Noble Sissle, Moore was area of the last Louis Armstrong big music group (1944-47). When the orchestra split up, he started freelancing in the Dixieland globe, frequently playing at Jimmy Ryan’s. Moore proved helpful in a music group with Ruby Braff and Pee Wee Russell (1952), and performed with Eddie Condon, Crazy Costs Davison, Jimmy McPartland and Tony Parenti among numerous others. In 1953 he toured in European countries with Mezz Mezzrow and documented with Sidney Bechet, Buck Clayton and Mezzrow. Moore remained quite energetic and was Trummy Young’s successor using the Louis Armstrong All-Stars (1964-65) before he still left due to disease. The trombonist retrieved, led his very own Dixieland music group (frequently playing in Canada), documented with Cozy Cole in 1977 and toured Britain in 1981 with Keith Smith. Moore documented as a head for Vogue (two game titles in 1953), Trutone (1953) and Jazz Artwork (1973).
