Bertolt Brecht

Biography

Playwright, poet and lyricist Bertolt Brecht was being among the most controversial numbers ever to effect musical theater; an avowed Marxist, he frequently worked well in tandem with composer Kurt Weill to generate probably one of the most provocative body of function ever staged. Brecht was created Feb 10, 1898 in Augsburg, Bavaria; while going to Munich University or college, he was drafted to serve as a medic in Globe War I, later on forging a profession as a article writer. His early Expressionist dramas — Trommeln in der Nacht, Baal and Im Dickicht der Stadte — shown his anti-establishment leanings, in addition to an obsession with assault; then spent a lot of the 1920s touring the cabaret circuits of Germany and Scandinavia, frequently courting further controversy on the outspoken politics and nihilistic advantage of his tunes. In 1928 Brecht gained his best theatrical achievement with Die Dreigroschenoper, a musical version of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera offering music made up by Weill; just like the prior year’s Mann Ist Mann and 1929’s Mahagonny, it spotlighted the playwright’s present for incisive satire of bourgeois sensibilities. By 1933, Brecht — exiled to Denmark within the wake from the Reichstag fireplace — had obtained an international popularity on the effectiveness of work just like the Threepenny Opera, which opened up within an English-language edition on Broadway. An outspoken critic from the Nazis, his has, poems and radio dramas of the time attacked the Hitler routine with thinly-veiled contempt; finally, in 1941 he was compelled to flee to Hollywood to flee the Nazis’ wrath, settling there to create functions including Der Kaukasische Kreidekreis and Leben des Galilei. In 1947 Brecht was known as before the Home Un-American Actions Committee for his pro-Communist values; he then shifted to East Berlin, where he set up his own movie theater, the Berliner Outfit. He passed away on August 14, 1956.
