Benny Fields

Biography

b. Benjamin Geisenfeld, 14 June 1894, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, d. 16 August 1959, NEW YORK, NY, USA. A favorite vaudeville entertainer, Areas made an appearance in Greenwich Community Follies (1928). Also within the ensemble was Blossom Seeley, a Broadway superstar. They were wedded, Areas getting Seeley’s third hubby, and they frequently partnered each other on stage until his loss of life. A brief glance of their work is seen within a 10-minute film short, Blossom Seeley And Bennie Areas (1929). This features Seeley and Areas (billed right here as Bennie) performing towards the duel piano accompaniment of Charles Bourne and Phil Ellis. Areas also made short appearances within the movies Mr. Broadway (1933) as well as the Big Broadcast Of 1937 (1936). Within the last mentioned, Areas sings ‘Right here’s Love INSIDE YOUR Eyesight’ with Larry Adler and Benny Goodman’s orchestra. The brief with Seeley aside, little feeling of Areas’ talent could be obtained from these film performances. The biopic, Someone Adores Me (1952), didn’t help, inaccurately tracing the life span tale of Seeley and Areas, performed by Betty Hutton and Ralph Meeker. Several moments between 1954 and 1958, Areas appeared on tv in Toast Of THE CITY. Thankfully for posterity, Areas played the business lead in a single feature film, Minstrel Guy (1944), that was aimed by Joseph H. Lewis. Within this film, which became on Dvd movie in the first 00s, Areas is Dixie Youngster Johnson, a ‘blackface’ vocalist within a minstrel present that has Broadway within the hand of his hands. After his wife dies in childbirth, he leaves his baby girl with friends, nearly drowns at ocean, then switches into hiding for many years before time for see his child become a celebrity on Broadway. Among many tunes Areas sings are four created for the film by Harry Revel and Paul Francis Webster, ‘I Don’t Treatment If The Globe IS AWARE OF It’, ‘My Bamboo Cane’, ‘Cindy’ and ‘Keep in mind Me To Carolina’, the second option becoming nominated unsuccessfully for an Oscar. The music arranger for the film was Ferde Grofé. Uncomfortably for current audiences, the creation numbers are carried out in ‘blackface’ but there’s, fortunately, a nightclub series when Areas appears without make-up, accompanying himself in the piano inside a medley of tunes. Areas’ singing tone of voice is usually mellow and tuneful and he presents the tunes carefully and restraint.
