Benny Bailey

It is a little ironic that Benny Bailey is most beneficial known for his efforts towards the famous Eddie Harris/Les McCann Swiss Motion recording, since he admitted down the road that he didn’t look after the funky music. An extroverted and extremely expressive participant who mostly made an appearance in boppish configurations, Bailey’s longtime home in Europe led to him gaining much less fame (although most likely more function) than if he previously spent additional time in the U.S. Bailey experienced some teaching on piano and flute early in his profession, switched completely to trumpet, and analyzed in the Cleveland Conservatory of Music. In the first 1940s, he used organizations led by Bull Moose Jackson and Scatman Crothers. After gigging with Jay McShann, he was with Dizzy Gillespie’s big music group from 1947-1948, and became an integral person in the Lionel Hampton Orchestra (1948-1953). The trumpeter still left Hampton throughout a Western european tour, settling abroad. He spent an extended period in Sweden, dealing with Harry Arnold’s big music group (1957-1959), documenting with Stan Getz and touring with Quincy Jones (1959). A short visit to america in 1960 (where he documented a near-classic record for Candid, Big Brass) was accompanied by his relocation to Germany. Bailey proved helpful steadily, documenting with Eric Dolphy in 1961, getting featured using the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Music group, touring with George Gruntz’s Concert Jazz music group, and in 1986 he joined up with the Paris Reunion Music group. As well as the Candid time, Bailey led periods for many Western european brands, including Sonet, Metronome, Saba, Independence, Enja, Ego, Popular Home, and Gemini, plus an American occur 1978 for Jazzcraft. Nonetheless it can be his explosive solos on “Cool Duck Period” and “In comparison to What” through the Harris/McCann concert (today also on video) that produced him most well-known. Bailey documented a well-received tribute to Louis Armstrong entitled The Satchmo Legacy in 2000 and taken care of a dynamic touring plan.
