Biography
Bennie Moten is today best-remembered because the leader of the music group that partly became the nucleus of the initial Count number Basie Orchestra, but Moten deserves better. He was an excellent ragtime-oriented pianist who led the very best territory music group from the 1920s, an orchestra that basically set the typical for Kansas Town jazz. Actually it was therefore dominating that Moten could swallow up a few of his rivals’ organizations including Walter Page’s Blue Devils, the majority of whom ultimately became users of Moten’s big music group. Moten created his group (originally a sextet) in 1922 and the next year they produced their 1st recordings. Among Moten’s 1923-1925 edges for Okeh was the initial edition of his very best strike “South.” During 1926-1932, Moten’s Orchestra documented for Victor and, although non-e of his initial musicians became popular, the later improvements included his sibling Buster on periodic jazz accordion, Harlan Leonard, Jack port Washington, Eddie Durham, Jimmy Hurrying, Hot Lips Web page, and (beginning in 1929) Count number Basie. So impressed was Moten by Basie’s playing that Count number assumed the piano seat for recordings in the future (although in night clubs Moten would generally play an attribute or two). Probably the most popular Bennie Moten documenting program was also his last, ten tunes cut on Dec 13, 1932 that discovered the ensemble highly resembling Basie’s five years later on. Furthermore to Hot Lip area Web page, Durham, Washington, and Basie, the music group at that time also starred Ben Webster, Eddie Barefield, and Walter Web page and one from the high factors was the debut of “Moten Golf swing.” Tragically, Bennie Moten passed away in 1935 from a botched tonsillectomy procedure. Buster Moten briefly overran the music group, but a lot of its best members (alongside some important improvements like Lester Youthful) ultimately gravitated towards Count number Basie.
