Bebo Valdés

Biography

Born in Oct 1918 in Quivican, Cuba, Bebo Valdés played piano from an early on age group and was very dynamic being a performer, composer, arranger, and music director in various Havana nightclubs through the entire ‘40s and in to the 50s. Of these years, he was also playing and organizing for numerous documenting dates. Very respectable inside the Cuban musical globe, Valdés caused many performers, including Mario Bauza and Ernesto Lecuona. Using the development of Afro-Cuban music worldwide, Valdés toured European countries as well as the U.S. In 1960, disappointed with the brand new politics power in Cuba, Valdés still left his homeland, taking on home in Stockholm, Sweden in 1963. He continuing to compose and play but, even though his kid Chucho Valdés acquired become an internationally known jazz musician, it wasn’t before past due ‘90s that he was cut back into a documenting studio. Inspired by Paquito D’Rivera, whose dad was a pal of Valdés and who was simply also a co-employee of Chucho off their period jointly in Irakere, a program was organized and occurred in Germany. Valdés constructed a lot of the music (a lot of it created in haste your day before) and performed on the program; his functionality was remarkably great taking into consideration the decades-long layoff from full-time executing. Also over the program with Valdés and D’Rivera had been Juan-Pablo Torres (trombone), Diego Urcola (trumpet), Amadito Valdés (percussion), and Carlos Emilio Morales (electric guitar; ex-Irakere). That record proclaimed a resurgence for Valdés. His follow-up record was a trio established with Israel “Cachao” Lopez and Carlos “Patato” Valdés, although D’Rivera guested on some monitors. Valdés continuing to record in to the 2010s. He is able to be seen within the documentary film, Calle 54 (2000), where he shows up alongside many Latin jazz exponents, including his kid Chucho, Gato Barbieri, Eliane Elias, Chico O’Farrill, and Tito Puente. The coincidental rise appealing in traditional Cuban music, prompted partly with the Buena Vista Public Club albums, performed a job in Valdés’ twilight profession success. Nevertheless, it had been clear that being a composer he performed an important component within the music of Latin America generally, and Afro-Cuban jazz specifically. Bebo Valdés passed away of pneumonia on 22 March 2013 in Stockholm at age 94.
