Bayo Martins

b. Adebayo Santos Martins, 24 November 1932, Calabar, Nigeria, d. 12 August 2003, Germany. An amazingly competent percussionist, Martins was an associate of many African bands, included in this Koriko Klan, which he shaped in the 50s and which afterwards evolved in to the African Messengers, and Music group Africana. He researched journalism in Britain and wrote thoroughly on well-known music for papers in Nigeria and somewhere else. In the 60s he drew jointly other African music artists, specifically drummers, developing the Bayo Martins Generative Afro Jazz Drumming as well as the Afro Jazz Group. Martins was specifically interested in getting latter-day African polyrhythmic drumming and harmonies into modern jazz from the 60s and 70s. Among music artists with whom he performed are Inyang Henshaw, Chris Ajilo, Bobby Benson and Man Warren aka Kofi Ghanaba. Martins was Creator/President from the Music artists Base of Nigeria, a business that helped increase cash with which to get musical musical instruments for and improve the ethnic profile of Nigerian functioning music artists, and of the Bayo Martins Music Archive. Politically energetic throughout most of his adult lifestyle, Martins got his music, idea and political considered to many countries in Africa and somewhere else, travelling thoroughly in Europe through the past due 50s. He was a regular lecturer at different academic centres, like the Frobenius Institute at Frankfurt College or university in 1980. Among his compositions are ‘Offertory For Drums’, and his stage functions consist of Shantus Of Shanta.
