This Brighton, England-based six-piece band mingled ethnic drumming with house music, with vocals by Sharon Scott (who previously caused Soul II Soul). Produced in 1992, they enticed the effective advocacy of Kiss-FM disk jockey Patrick Forge (b. 21 Might 1962, Ipswich, Suffolk, Britain) once they paid a tape in a Talkin’ Loud Information membership evening in London. He was thrilled by the genuine Brazilian noises the band made. Batu’s guitarist Chris Franck (b. 12 Sept 1968, Düsseldorf, Germany), after playing samba while learning for a level in France, was tutored by two expatriate Brazilians, Pedro (electric guitar) and Beberto de Souza (octopusine percussion). Their debut one, ‘Periods Of My Brain’/‘Keep It Right now’, prefaced a samba/home contribution to Isle Information’ Rebirth Of Great series. Their experience for Latin music was serious: ‘What Batu are performing is taking a geniune method of Brazilian music, but we’re 90s people, we result from a golf club tradition. You can’t keep on producing music now without having to be alert to hip-hop creation.’ Franck and Forge continued working collectively in Da Lata, using the second option also recording within Smoke City.
