Basquiat Strings

A Uk jazz quintet led by cellist and composer Ben Davis, Basquiat Strings combines components of the classical string quartet (twin violins, cello, and viola) using a jazz tempo section (bass and drums) in arrangements that allow a lot of open up space for improvisation. A lot of the group’s materials is compiled by Davis, but they’ve also tackled reinterpretations of parts like Wayne Shorter’s “Baby Eye” and Ornette Coleman’s “Unhappy Woman,” blending in Western european folk components with traditional and jazz sources to create cross types arrangements that broaden in the originals even while they stick to them. The lineup is certainly somewhat liquid, but generally contains Davis (cello), Emma Smith and Victoria Fifield (violins), Jennymay Logan (viola), Richard Pryce (bass), and Seb Rochford (drums).A debut album, Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford, premiered in 2007.
