Biography

The Banda Mantiqueira will be the best Brazilian big music group, devoted to a specific synthesis of Brazilian instrumental music. Though they’re always fighting the anticipated hardships of a big group focusing on instrumental music making it through a detrimental environment, the music group had some identification when their debut record was nominated for the Grammy as Greatest Latin Jazz Record. Saxophonist Nailor Azevedo (Proveta) and trumpeter Walmir Gil (who’ve been operating collectively since around 1977) got already shaped the rings Sambop Brass and Aquarius, but both dissolved before having an opportunity to record. In 1992, both shaped the Banda Mantiqueira, quickly acknowledged as the very best energetic big music group in Brazil. From 1993 until its shutting in 1999, the music group performed every Mon in the Vou Vivendo in São Paulo. The knowledge of playing for a normal and faithful general public at that pub reshaped the band’s musical conception. Primarily specialized in American jazz music by such performers as John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, their encounter in the Vou Vivendo was instrumental in linking the music group having a conception of Brazilian instrumental music, and therefore influenced their creation of plans like the music of Brazilian composers like Pixinguinha and Tom Jobim. The key efforts of bassist/arranger Edson Alves, who explores the melodic part of his plans, had been also fundamental within the turnaround. Their 1st recording, Aldeia (1996), was nominated for any Grammy the next year as Greatest Latin Jazz Recording. Other performances well worth mentioning were in the Kaiser Bock Event (São Paulo 1997), the Free of charge Jazz Event (São Paulo/Rio de Janeiro, 1998), as well as the Event de Inverno de Campos perform Jordão (2000).
