Babs Gonzales

A restricted but enthusiastic singer, Babs Gonzales did what he could to popularize bop. He previously short stints with Charlie Barnet and Lionel Hampton, and led his personal group (Three Bips & a Bop) during 1946-1949. They documented 24 figures during 1947-1949, like the first edition of “Oop-Pop-A-Da” and such tunes as “Strange Lullaby,” “A Lesson in Bopology,” “Teacher Bop,” and “Prelude to some Headache”; among his sidemen on these times had been Tadd Dameron, Tony Scott, Roy Haynes, Wayne Moody, J.J. Johnson, Julius Watkins, Sonny Rollins (producing his documenting debut), Artwork Pepper, Wynton Kelly, and also Don Redman. Nevertheless, after the bop “trend” finished, Gonzales became even more of a cult number. He caused Wayne Moody (1951-1953), documented with Jimmy Smith and Johnny Griffin, went his personal label (Expubidence), and published two autobiographies which were more vibrant than accurate.
