Biography
Aunt Molly Jackson is among the most overlooked, yet influential, statistics in American folk music. Not merely was she a modern of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly, she was also a significant impact on Pete Seeger. Sadly her recorded result consists of a unitary, recorded in the first ’30s. Delivered Mary Magdalene Garland in 1880 within the coal mining nation of Kentucky, she wedded in her early teenagers and became a qualified midwife by enough time she was 18. Since Jackson was therefore youthful when she shipped her initial baby, rather than following the custom made of the days by contacting midwives “Grandma,” she insisted getting known as “Aunt Molly” rather. Jackson was the wife of the miner within the Kentucky coal areas. Once the miners made a decision to hit for better pay out and working circumstances, she had written her first tune about the knowledge. Amid the hit, several authors led by Theodore Dreiser and John Dos Passos found Kentucky on the fact-finding tour. One of the interviewed miners and family, Jackson sang her tune, “Hungry Ragged Blues.” The impressed committee persuaded her to visit NEW YORK and make use of her singing to improve money for the strikers, which she do. After the hit was resolved, Jackson remained on in NEW YORK and continuing as an activist and vocalist, where she became known one of the folk and radical neighborhoods. Her first compositions to make an impression listeners within the radical motion had been “Miner’s Hungry Ragged Blues” and “Poor Miner’s Farewell.” By 1960 Jackson was impoverished but still was focusing on an LP of first materials when she passed away suddenly. Through the 1970s, some of these songs had been released on the Rounder anthology.
