Asmat Dream

Indonesia can be an archpalego of 13,667 islands with 300 cultural groupings and 365 dialects and dialects. Most widely known because of its gamelan music custom, the area has spawned several highly imaginative, modern, composers. Several composers had been brought together, from 1992, as Asmat Desire for the to begin a three compact disc set, “SONGS Of Indonesia” by Jody Gemstone, a composer, scholar, gamelan musician, trainer of Indonesian music at U.C. Berkeley, Mills University and Dartmouth University as well as the director from the American Gamelan Institute. “Asmat Desire” features nine compositions, commissioned from the composers’ collective, Frog Maximum Music, as well as the American Gamelan Institute, by four composers from Indonesia’s Sundra region-Dody Satya Ekkagusediman, Harry Roelsi, Nano S. and SuhendiAfryanto. The effect is a display for the variety of Indonesia’s contemporary composers. While Ekkagusediman includes such noises as the clucking of the poultry, sandpaper and motorbike helmets, Roesli paints an electric soundscape which includes tape looped crickets, keyboards and sampled voices and Afryanto shows an affinity for noises previously unheard.
