Musical influences from around the world are fused in to the world master sounds of Ash Ka Ru. The recipients of “Music Africa” honours as “Greatest Pan African Music group” in 1994 and “Greatest African Music group” in 1995, Ash Ka Ru combines global rhythms with politically-tinged lyrics sung in a number of languages. Although located in Toronto, Ash Ka Ru includes music artists and vocalists from Ethiopia, Ireland, THE UNITED STATES, the Bahamas, India and Kenya. Based on “Performer” journal, Ash Ka Ru “episodes with three vocalists performing in a minimum of as many dialects and a global beat influenced rhythmic groove that operates deep and wide”. In the beginning conceived by Canadian multi-instrumentalist, history vocalist and composer Chip Yarwood, Ash Ka Ru features the business lead vocals of Ethiopia-born Yared Tesfayed and Bahamian Selina Carol. The high stage of Ash Ka Ru’s debut recording, “Mom Tongue, released in 1996, was a lively rendition of the group structure, “Maray Wollelaye”, sung in Amharic, the nationwide vocabulary of Ethiopia.
