In its most prominent incarnation, the free-improv noise duo Ascension was an offshoot from the Skullflower/Ramleh family tree, a loose collective of noise-rock bands with ties to psychedelia and early industrial music. Originally produced in 1992 by drummer/guitarist Tony Irving and bassist Russell Hedges, Ascension released several cassette-only produces before Hedges was changed by guitarist Stefan Jaworzyn in early 1993. Jaworzyn was a veteran from the Matthew Bower-led noise-rock tasks Skullflower and Total, and acquired also used commercial provocateurs Whitehouse for a while in 1984. Jaworzyn’s high-voltage electric guitar took Ascension within a very much farther-out path, and he shortly began to concern their recordings on his already-established Surprise label. The to begin those was 1993’s extraordinarily limited-edition EP (three copies) Three Game titles, which was shortly re-released by Dirter Campaigns with one brand-new monitor as Live/Deceased. Their first genuine full-length, Five Game titles, premiered in 1994 on Surprise and culled partially from live shows. This began to acquire them some interest in the free-improv community, and resulted in the forming of a aspect project known as Descension, which teamed Jaworzyn and Irving with bassist Simon Fell and saxophonist/clarinetist Charles Wharf. Descension toured the U.K. under an Arts Council give in 1995, and released a live recording on Surprise as well. In the mean time, Ascension released its second recording, Ascension LP, in 1995 on Fusetron, and opened up for Japanese sound symbols Merzbow that summer season. In early 1996, they performed many live gigs for any Bay Region radio station, that have been released later on that yr as the double-disc Broadcast recording. That Apr, Descension opened up two London displays for Sonic Youngsters; the second, in the Forum, was received violently from the mainly rock target audience, who threw containers and glasses in the group. The event appeared to be something of the breaking stage for Jaworzyn; although Ascension performed several even more gigs enduring into 1998, they released forget about recordings, as well as the Surprise label was efficiently place to rest. Jaworzyn do continue steadily to perform sometimes with Alan Wilkinson.
