Arthur Barron

An excellent saxophonist using a audio of his own, Arthur Barron’s main recordings so far have already been a time co-led by pianist Hilton Ruiz (and in addition featuring flugelhornist Pete Minger) and his own Spirit Messenger, both released as CDs by Dragon Rose in 1994. Barron originally performed drums and trumpet before switching to alto. He went to the Berklee College of Music, inspired by both bebop and R&B, and began doubling on flute. In the 1970s, he proved helpful being a concert tour supervisor for the CTI label, spent period controlling Keystone Korner in SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, gigged briefly using the Eddie Henderson-Julian Priester music group, and was influenced on tenor by Joe Henderson (who offered him lessons) and Pharoah Sanders. Over time spent in Spain in the past due ’70s, Barron shifted to NY, where he led a funk-oriented group in addition to a jazz quartet. He gigged in NY through a lot of the 1980s (including leading a funk music group called the Soaring Tigers), and shifted to Florida, where he opened up the golf club Tropics International and led the octet Shed within the Shuffle. 1989-91 was spent in Hong Kong and gigging within the East before time for Miami in 1991 to be able to work Rose’s Pub & Music and begin the Dragon Rose label.
