Similarly adept with alto saxophone, clarinet, and violin, Artwork Landry led a jazzy small dance band through the 1920s that made records that are comparable with the very best offerings from bandleaders Sam Lanin, Isham Jones, Jean Goldkette, and Paul Specht. Landry was created in Montreal in 1896. Classically qualified like a violinist, he offered in the U.S. Marines with saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft. It had been during this time period that Landry befriended New Orleans cornetist and bandleader Joe “Ruler” Oliver.
