Anton van Rooy

In his day, Anton Van Rooy was thought to be the best male singer in Wagnerian opera. Truck Rooy studied tone of voice in Frankfurt under Julius Stockhausen and started his profession in 1894 being a vocalist of oratorio and German Lieder. Truck Rooy produced his operatic debut on the 1897 Bayreuth Celebration partly through the urging of Cosima Wagner. He proved helpful in the Bayreuth business until 1902, playing all of the major bass jobs in Richard Wagner’s operas, including Wotan, the Dutchman, and Hans Sachs.
