Among the initial great woman jazz performers, in the past due ’20s Annette Hanshaw ranked close to the best with Ethel Waters, the Boswell Sisters, as well as the upcoming Mildred Bailey. Unlike her modern Ruth Etting, Hanshaw could improvise and golf swing while also being truly a solid interpreter of lyrics. She had not been quite 16 when she began her recording profession, and her recordings (1926-1934) included such main jazz players as Crimson Nichols, Miff Mole, Jimmy Lytell, Adrian Rollini, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Vic Berton, Benny Goodman, Manny Klein, Phil Napoleon, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, and Jack port Teagarden. Billed simply because “the Personality Female,” Annette Hanshaw (whose brand was stating, “That’s all” by the end of her record) shortly got sick and tired of present business and retired in 1934, at age 24. She resided beyond music for the others of her lifestyle, but fortunately the majority of her records had been reissued on United kingdom LPs in the 1970s and ’80s.
