Ann Gilbert

Found out on Chicago’s South Part, Ann Gilbert surfaced briefly in the mid-’50s within the Groove label, RCA’s blues/jazz subsidiary. She’d started singing in chapel at age four and by ten, she was a normal on the air program Youthful America Sings. She acted and sang in summer season share musicals and appeared destined to get a career in traditional music when jazz beckoned. Gilbert was learning traditional music at Lindenwood University for Ladies in St. Charles, MO. She started improvising in the piano and discovered that she desired tinkering with music as opposed to the formality of traditional study. Gilbert started singing in night clubs, operating as her personal accompanist, and started building a status at night clubs in Indianapolis and Chicago. In 1956, she got her big opportunity to record when she was authorized to Groove Information by a skill scout moving through Chicago. The effect was her just album, THE COUNTLESS Moods of Ann, which she was followed from the Elliot Lawrence Orchestra. Pianist/bandleader Elliot Lawrence also do the preparations; her accompanists included Al Cohn on tenor sax and clarinet; Harold McKusick on alto, clarinet, and flute; Sam Marowitz on alto and clarinet; and Osie Johnson on drums.
