Andrew “Smokey” Hogg

Smokey Hogg was a rural bluesman navigating a postwar period infatuated by R&B, but he got along quite nicely non-etheless, scoring a set of main R&B strikes in 1948 and 1950 and reducing a dense catalog for the slew of brands (including Exclusive, Contemporary, Bullet, Macy’s, Imperial, Mercury, Recorded in Hollywood, Area of expertise, Fidelity, Combo, Government, and Showtime). Through the early ’30s, Hogg, who was simply inspired by Big Costs Broonzy and Peetie Wheatstraw, caused slide guitarist Dark Ace at dances around Greenville, Tx. Hogg first documented for Decca in 1937, nonetheless it was an isolated incident — he didn’t allow it to be back to a studio room for ten years. Once he strike his stride, though, Hogg didn’t appearance back again. Both his graph strikes — 1948’s “Very long High Mama” and 1950’s “Small School Woman” — had been issued on Contemporary, but his rough-hewn audio seldom changed a lot no real matter what L.A. logo design he was showing up on.
